Choriatiki – Greek Salad
A staple as either a starter is choriatiki, or “Greek salad.” On a hot day, this cool and fresh salad is a welcome addition to the table.
Total ingredients may vary, but typically it is made with cucumber, olives, tomatoes, onions, and larges pieces or crumbled feta. The salad is usually served undressed, but most places will offer a variety of dressings including local olive oil, vinegar, with salt and pepper. For a complete meal, we recommend ordering a protein such as souvlaki or some fresh seafood to add to this refreshing salad.
Moussaka
This classic dish has become popular in the United States for good reason! Minced beef is simmered in tomato sauce, layered with eggplant, and topped with bechamel sauce before being broiled in the oven. It’s truly filling, so you won’t want to fill up on appetizers or order too many side dishes.
While it can be found on lunch menus, we recommend you order it for dinner on the evenings when you’re not planning to stay out dancing. It’s delicious but pretty heavy.
Souvlaki
Greek Food: Another familiar Greek dish that can be found in the US, this is a staple of tavernas cross Greece. Souvlaki is a catch-all name for seasoned meats that are served on skewers. Popular choices are pork or chicken, but it’s also possible to find lamb or steak. Some places will serve the meat wrapped in a pita, and/or with a side of fries.
A truly simple yet satisfying meal on a busy day in Greece!
Frappe
Not to be confused with the sugary coffee concoctions found in American coffee shops, Greek frappes are perfectly refreshing coffee treats you won’t soon forget!
The ingredients are water, instant coffee, milk, and sugar. Don’t let the instant coffee concept put you off, though. Greek baristas use some sort of magic to whip up the milk to make something skin to a cold cappuccino, and sugar is optional. This frothy drink is the perfect pick-me-up on a hot Greek day. Best served with ocean views!
Revani
Greek Food: A simple and satisfying dessert. Revani is a simple cake made from seminola and yogurt that’s been soaked with simple syrup. Often, the syrup is flavored with orange or lemon for a slightly citrus taste. It originated in northern Greece, specifically in the Macedonia region, but it can be found all over the country today.
Typically when dining at restaurants, a meal will conclude with a plate of fresh fruit and possibly a piece of pastry or cake for a sweet finish. Revani is often one of those cakes that are served with the fruit. Even if the restaurants you choose don’t offer revani as part of the dessert plate, it’s worth seeking out at one of the many bakeries across Athens and the islands!
