Why Japan

Ancient and ultramodern, in the same afternoon.

Japan rewards the traveler who looks closely. In a single day you can move from a 1,400-year-old temple to the world’s busiest crossing, from a Michelin counter to a standing noodle bar, from neon to a moss garden in absolute silence. Getting Japan right means pairing the icons with the quiet moments — and timing it to the season: cherry blossom, autumn maple, or winter snow.

Juniper designs every Japan itinerary as a fully private, custom journey — no group tours, no fixed packages. From a Tokyo design hotel to a ryokan in the Mt Fuji area with a private onsen, every detail, guide, and rail ticket is arranged before you travel.

Cities, Temples & Gardens
Tokyo’s energy, Kyoto’s thousand temples and Zen gardens, Nara’s Great Buddha — explored with private guides who get you in early and explain what you’re seeing.
Ryokan, Onsen & Cuisine
Traditional inns with in-room hot-spring baths and multi-course kaiseki dinners, sushi counters and izakaya, sake and hands-on experiences — a taiko drumming session, calligraphy, a samurai sword class, a tea ceremony. Japan’s food, craft, and hospitality are a destination in themselves.
Seasons, Rail & the Alps
Cherry blossom and autumn maple, the glide of the Shinkansen, and the mountain Japan of Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and alpine onsen towns — paced entirely around you.

Great custom travel is an investment. Your specialist will walk through exactly what a fully private, tailor-made Japan itinerary looks like for your trip during a free 30-minute consultation.

Sample Itinerary

Best of Japan — 8 Days

Tokyo · Hakone · Kyoto · Osaka

This is a sample itinerary — for inspiration only. Every Juniper trip is designed from scratch around you. Many clients love an itinerary very similar to this one — if something here resonates, your specialist can build something just like it (or better) specifically for your travel style, dates, and group.

1
Arrive in Tokyo
Tokyo+
Welcome to Japan! After clearing Narita or Haneda, a private transfer brings you to your Tokyo hotel. Settle in and ease into the city at your own pace — your specialist will have arranged a gentle first evening, perhaps a quiet stroll and your first proper bowl of ramen, before the days ahead.
Overnight: Tokyo
A full day with a private guide tracing Tokyo from its oldest temple, Sensō-ji in Asakusa, to the serene Meiji Shrine and the controlled chaos of the Shibuya crossing. A food-focused afternoon — a Tsukiji market tasting, a tucked-away sushi counter, or a sake bar your guide knows. Tokyo rewards curiosity.
Overnight: Tokyo
Travel to Hakone, the hot-spring town in the foothills of Mt Fuji. On a clear day the mountain reflects in Lake Ashi. Check into a traditional ryokan, change into a yukata, and sink into a private onsen bath before a multi-course kaiseki dinner. The most restorative night of the trip.
Overnight: Hakone (ryokan)
A taste of the bullet train: the Shinkansen glides west to Kyoto in a couple of hours, Mt Fuji slipping past the window. Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for a thousand years and holds more than a thousand temples. Check in and spend the evening in the lantern-lit lanes of Gion, the old geisha district.
Overnight: Kyoto
A full day with a private guide through Kyoto's greatest sights — the thousands of vermilion torii gates of Fushimi Inari, the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji, and a Zen garden timed for the quiet hour. A tea ceremony or a visit with a maiko can be arranged.
Overnight: Kyoto
Morning in the Arashiyama bamboo grove and its riverside temples, then an easy trip to Nara — Japan's first capital — to see the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji and the free-roaming deer of the park. Back to Kyoto for a final evening.
Overnight: Kyoto
A short hop to Osaka, Japan's exuberant kitchen. Osaka Castle by day; by night the neon and street food of Dōtonbori — takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and whatever your guide steers you toward. A lively counterpoint to Kyoto's calm.
Overnight: Osaka
After breakfast, a private transfer brings you to Kansai International Airport. Most travelers leave Japan already planning a return — for the seasons, regions, and meals they didn't have time for. Your Juniper specialist remains reachable throughout departure day.

Common Questions

Japan travel questions

Two windows stand out. Spring (late March–April) brings the cherry blossoms — extraordinary, but it books out far ahead. Autumn (late October–November) brings the maple colours and crisp, clear days, and is arguably the most comfortable time to travel. Summer is hot and humid; winter is excellent for snow, onsen, and fewer crowds. Your specialist will time it to what you most want to see.
Most Juniper Japan itineraries run 10–14 days. Eight to ten days covers the classic Tokyo–Hakone–Kyoto route well. Twelve to fourteen lets you add Kanazawa, Hiroshima, the Japanese Alps, or the southern island of Kyushu. The Shinkansen makes the country remarkably easy to cover.
Wonderfully. Private ryokan with in-room onsen, kaiseki dinners, cherry blossoms or autumn maples, the quiet of a Kyoto temple at dawn, and the seclusion of the Alps or a southern island — Japan is one of the most romantic and distinctive honeymoons there is. See our dedicated Japan honeymoons guide.
Yes. Like every Juniper Tours journey, your Japan trip is 100% private and built from scratch around your dates, pace, and interests — no group tours and no pre-set packages. Private guides, rail tickets, ryokan, and experiences are arranged and confirmed before you travel.
Tokyo's mix of old and new, the temples and gardens of Kyoto, a ryokan night with Mt Fuji views near Lake Kawaguchiko, and the Shinkansen experience are the classics. Beyond them: Hiroshima and Miyajima, the gardens and craft of Kanazawa, the Japanese Alps, and the food of Osaka. Your specialist will help you choose the right combination for your season.
