Why Travel by Rail

Center to center, with the view out the window as part of the trip.

A Juniper rail trip links cities by first-class train, with a private driver meeting you at each station and hotels chosen for walking distance. There is no driving, no parking and no airport security between cities, and on lines like the Glacier Express and Bernina the journey is the highlight.

Rail is one of our four travel styles, and it is often paired with another: a private driver for the Amalfi Coast, or a short self-drive through the Norwegian fjords. Every itinerary is built from scratch by a named specialist and quoted to your route; most Juniper itineraries land between $5,000 and $15,000 per person.

What’s Included

Rail travel, done properly.

The trains are the easy part. What makes a rail trip work is everything around them: the seat, the transfer, the hotel and the plan for the days the rails don’t reach.

Private Station Transfers

A driver meets you on arrival at each station and takes you to the hotel, then back again on departure day. You never drag bags across a city.

  • Meet-and-greet on arrival
  • Luggage handled door to train
  • Our 24/7 line rebooks if a connection slips

Hotels Chosen for the Rail Line

City hotels within walking distance of the old town and an easy hop to the station, so rail days start relaxed and city days start on foot.

  • Four- and five-star, hand-selected
  • Breakfast included
  • Lake, mountain and old-town locations

A Driver Where Rails Stop

Trains reach cities; the vineyards, villages and coast roads in between often need wheels. We add a private driver or a short self-drive leg for those days.

  • Tuscany, Amalfi, Douro and Bernese Oberland day trips
  • Private guides in every major city
  • One itinerary, one specialist

Where Rail Works

Rail isn’t right everywhere, and we’ll say so.

This is the same guidance our specialists give on your first call.

Before You Choose Rail

Four questions decide it

Our specialists don’t sell up. If a car or driver suits your route better, they’ll tell you.

01
Cities or countryside?

Rail is built for city-to-city trips. Villages, vineyards and coast roads need a driver for those days.

02
Which destination?

Switzerland and Japan are rail countries; Ireland and Iceland are not. See the table above.

03
How much luggage?

Our transfers carry bags to and from the platform, but packing light still makes rail days easier.

04
Scenery or speed?

Panoramic trains are the trip itself; high-speed lines just get you there. Most routes mix both.

Rail Travel FAQ

Questions travelers ask before a rail trip

First-class rail tickets with seat reservations on every leg, private transfers between each station and your hotel, hand-selected four- and five-star hotels near the old town and station, private guides in the major cities, and any scenic-train panoramic seats your route calls for. Everything sits in the Juniper Travel App, and our 24/7 line can rebook a missed connection. International airfare is quoted separately.
On the scenic lines and longer legs, yes. First class means a reserved seat in a quieter car with more luggage space, and on the Glacier Express, Bernina and GoldenPass it is where the best panoramic seating is. On the Shinkansen the equivalent is the Green Car. We book first class by default and will tell you where second class is perfectly fine if you would rather save.
It depends on the route. A Swiss Travel Pass usually pays off on a multi-stop Switzerland trip because it also covers lake boats, city transit and many mountain railways. In Italy, Spain and Japan, point-to-point first-class tickets booked ahead are often cheaper than a pass for a typical itinerary. Your specialist prices both and books whichever comes out ahead.
Your driver takes your bags from the hotel to the platform and meets you with them at the other end, so you only handle them on and off the train. For lighter travel, Switzerland also offers luggage forwarding between stations, which we can arrange so your cases arrive at the next hotel without you.
Yes, and most of our rail itineraries do. A typical Italy trip takes the Frecciarossa from Venice to Florence to Rome, then a private driver down to the Amalfi Coast. Norway pairs the Bergen and Flåm railways with a fjord cruise and a short self-drive. Your specialist recommends the right style for each leg.
Switzerland and Japan are the two places where rail is almost always the right answer. Italy, Spain and France are excellent for city-to-city travel by high-speed train. Norway, Portugal, Scotland and Peru work for specific legs. Ireland, Iceland and Greece are better done by car, driver or ferry.
Begin 6 to 12 months before departure for summer travel. Panoramic trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express sell out in peak season, and the best small hotels near the stations go early. We book seats as soon as each line opens reservations.
