What is the difference between a self-drive tour and a private driver tour?+
On a self-drive tour you drive a rental car we book along a day-by-day route we design, with every hotel and experience pre-arranged. On a private driver tour a dedicated driver-guide and vehicle travel with you for the whole trip, handling navigation, parking, timing and local commentary. Both are 100% private and custom; self-drive typically starts around $2,500 per person, while a private driver adds the driver's daily rate, vehicle, fuel and lodging.
How much does a private driver cost in Ireland or Scotland?+
A full-time driver-guide is priced per day for the vehicle and driver, before hotels and experiences, and the rate depends on season, vehicle size and trip length. For a group of four or more the per-person cost is often close to a self-drive trip once two rental cars are no longer needed. Juniper quotes the driver as a line item so you can compare both styles side by side.
Is self-drive a good idea in Italy?+
Only in the countryside. Tuscany, Umbria, Puglia and Sicily work well as self-drive; Rome, Florence, Venice and the Amalfi Coast do not, because of restricted traffic zones, parking and the coast road. Most Juniper Italy itineraries use a private driver or first-class rail between cities and a car only for a rural stretch.
What does "luxury escorted" include that a private driver trip doesn't?+
A private expert guide at each destination in addition to the driver, 5-star and historic-estate properties only, private or after-hours access to sites, chef's-table and Michelin reservations, and special segments such as helicopter transfers, yacht days or scenic rail. A private driver trip can include any of these individually; the escorted style includes them by default.
What is the difference between a trip type and a travel style?+
The trip type is the occasion: Juniper offers custom travel, honeymoon and couples travel, wellness travel, private group tours, guided tours and educational travel. The travel style is how you move once you arrive: self-drive, private driver, rail, or luxury escorted. Every trip type except guided tours is 100% private and can be built in any style; guided tours are small-group departures on fixed dates with partner operators, and are the lowest-priced way to travel with Juniper.
Which travel style is best for a honeymoon, a family group, or a school trip?+
Honeymoons most often pair with luxury escorted or private driver so neither of you is navigating. Family and multi-generational groups of four or more nearly always choose a private driver with a vehicle sized to the group. School, club and alumni trips travel by private coach with subject-matter guides. Two confident adults on a custom trip are the classic self-drive travelers.
Is a train trip or a self-drive trip better in Europe?+
It depends on where you're going. Rail wins for city-to-city trips in Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland and Japan: first-class trains run station to station in two to three hours, there is no driving or parking, and we add a private car at each end. Self-drive wins where the trip is the countryside itself: Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Portugal and Tuscany. Many Juniper itineraries combine the two, taking the train between cities and a car or driver for the rural days.
Can we mix styles in one trip?+
Yes, and most multi-country trips do. A typical Ireland and Scotland itinerary uses a driver-guide in Ireland and a self-drive loop in the Highlands; Japan pairs a private driver in Tokyo and Kyoto with the Shinkansen between them. Your specialist recommends the right style for each leg.
How far in advance should we book, and what is the deposit?+
Begin 6 to 12 months before departure for peak summer and holiday travel, and 4 to 6 months for shoulder season. Driver-guides and the best small properties are the first things to sell out. A deposit confirms the itinerary; the balance is due before departure on a schedule set in your proposal.
