Osaka · Nagano · Nagoya · Kinosaki Onsen
Arrive into Osaka, where a private driver meets you and brings you into the city — no fumbling with rail passes in the cold, just a quiet handover and the neon of winter Japan rising around you. The first evening eases you in along Dōtonbori, the illuminated canal district glowing against the dark, before the steaming stalls of Kuromon Market the next morning — a winter food tasting of fresh seafood, wagyu, and seasonal street snacks at their December–February best.
The crisp winter air is made for the grounds of Osaka Castle, and the retro lanes of Shinsekai for a kushikatsu dinner under the old neon. As the light fades, ride up the Umeda Sky Building for panoramic sunset and night views over the winter skyline. There is time too for optional shopping in Shinsaibashi and Namba — and always another of Osaka's great comfort foods close at hand: ramen, okonomiyaki, and hot street eats.
North into the snow country of Nagano, where the pace slows and winter settles in properly. Wander Nakamise Street — street food, boutique artisanal shops — on the approach to a private tour of the great Zenkō-ji Temple, one of Japan's most important, atmospheric under winter light. A daytrip runs to the small town of Obuse: the Hokusai Museum, the town's famous chestnut treats, and bucolic countryside and architecture under snow.
Then the sight winter Japan is known for: Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, the only place on earth where wild macaques bathe in their own steaming hot spring, dozing in the water with snow piling on their heads. A private guide times the visit for the quiet hours, leaving the rest of the days unhurried — snow-laden valleys, warm noodle shops, and time to simply be in the mountains.
South to Nagoya, Japan's great unsung food city, and an evening street food walking tour through its lantern-lit alleys — miso, hitsumabushi, and the snacks the locals actually queue for. A daytrip heads to Inuyama, home to one of Japan's oldest original castles, its keep looking out over the winter river, with the old walking street below for snacking and souvenir-hunting.
Deeper into the hills lies Gujo Hachiman, a riverside town threaded with koi-filled canals and waterways. The day there unfolds slowly — a soba lunch, a sake tasting, and a hands-on workshop in the town's famous craft: the astonishingly lifelike wax food replicas displayed in restaurant windows across Japan. It is exactly the kind of off-the-beaten-path day this route was built for.
Finish in Kinosaki Onsen, the classic hot-spring town near the Sea of Japan coast — snow-covered willow-lined canals, wooden bathhouses, and lantern-lit evening strolls. You settle into a traditional ryokan with tatami rooms and winter kaiseki dinners, and take up the town's great tradition: onsen-hopping through the seven historic public baths in yukata and a padded haori, moving from bath to bath as the snow settles on the willows. Outdoor rotenburo baths in full winter scenery are the highlight — steam rising into falling snow.
Between soaks there is Onsen-ji Temple, the guardian of Kinosaki's hot-spring tradition, and an optional cable car ride for views over the Sea of Japan and the snowy mountains. Mostly, though, these final days are about the town's quiet coastal atmosphere — rest, reflection, and slow travel — before a private transfer carries you back to Osaka for your flight home, your specialist reachable until wheels-up.
