The single decision that shapes a Bali honeymoon is not which villa — it is which two places you stay, and in what order. Bali is not one destination. Ubud, the Bukit, Seminyak, Canggu, the east and the Nusa islands are genuinely different holidays, and the traffic between them means you cannot treat any of them as a day trip. Here is what each is actually like, and which pairings work.
Why can’t you just base yourselves in one place?
Because the island is slow. Ubud to the south coast is around two hours; Seminyak to Uluwatu can exceed one. A single base with daily excursions turns into three or four hours in a car most days.
Two bases over a week to ten days is the shape that works, three over a fortnight. Which two is the real question.
Ubud or Uluwatu?
This is the most common fork, and they could hardly be less alike.
Ubud is inland: river gorges, rice terraces, temples, spas, and the highest concentration of ceremony and craft on the island. It is cooler, greener and quieter, and the days start early because that is when the forest and the light are best. It is not a beach. Getting to one takes over an hour, so treat Ubud as a jungle stay rather than a compromise coastal one.
Uluwatu and the Bukit is the southern limestone peninsula: cliffs, long horizons, the most dramatic architecture in Bali, and sunsets that are the reason people book it. The beaches are genuinely beautiful and they sit at the bottom of steep cliff access, sometimes by lift, sometimes by a lot of steps.
If you want one word for each: Ubud is restorative, Uluwatu is cinematic. Most couples who do both put Ubud first, while jet lag is still making them wake at five.
Seminyak or Canggu?
The other fork, and a narrower one — these are neighbours on the same stretch of coast with different temperaments.
Seminyak is the established one: walled garden villas set back from the beach road, the widest choice of good restaurants, beach clubs, and the ability to walk to dinner. For couples who do not want to be driven everywhere, it is the most convenient base in Bali.
Canggu is younger and scruffier in a way people either love or do not: rice-paddy villas on the edge of the village, surf, cafes, a lot of scooters. The main road is a genuine traffic problem at peak times.
For a honeymoon specifically, Seminyak usually wins on comfort and Canggu on character.
What about the east and Sidemen?
Sidemen and East Bali are what people picture when they imagine Bali before the crowds: farmland, water temples, views up to Mount Agung, and very few other travellers. The trade is that there are few high-end properties and you are deliberately far from everything.
It works beautifully as a two or three-night interlude inside a longer trip. It is a harder sell as one half of a seven-day honeymoon, simply because the transfers eat too much of a short trip.
Should you add the Nusa islands?
If you have ten days or more, yes — and it is frequently the part couples name as the best.
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida sit a fast-boat hop off the southeast coast, and the water is what the mainland south coast is not: clear, calm in the right season, and genuinely good for snorkelling. Manta rays at Manta Point are close to reliable in season.
Penida is bigger, wilder and rougher underfoot, with the dramatic clifftop viewpoints. Lembongan is smaller and gentler, and easier as a honeymoon base. The crossing is short but it is a real sea crossing, and it is bumpier in the wet season.
Which pairing should you choose?

Where should you not stay on a honeymoon?
Kuta, for almost everybody. It is the oldest and busiest tourist strip on the island and it is not what you flew twenty-six hours for. Nusa Dua works for some couples — large gated resorts, calm swimming, very easy — but it is a resort enclave rather than Bali, and honeymooners who wanted texture tend to find it flat.
The other thing to avoid is a base chosen purely from a photograph. A stunning villa ninety minutes from anything you want to do is a worse honeymoon than a very good villa placed correctly.
