Bali Off the Beaten Track

Four days to settle into Bali's cultural heart at your own pace. Paddle out across the still water in the early quiet — no engines, no day-trippers, just the mist lifting off the surface. Nights are spent at Munduk Moding Plantation, a coffee-plantation retreat with a clifftop infinity pool in the cool highlands. It is the most restorative stretch of the journey.

Down to the quiet north coast and the fishing village of Pemuteran, a world away from Bali's busy south, settling into Amertha Bali Villas, beachfront villas on Bali's quiet north coast. The water here is calm and clear, the reefs healthy, and the pace unhurried. A boat carries you out to Menjangan Island in the West Bali National Marine Park for some of the best snorkeling in Bali — wall dives, coral gardens, and turtles in glassy, protected water.

Pemuteran is also home to a celebrated coral-reef restoration project, where Biorock structures are regrowing the reef and an underwater sculpture trail has formed beneath the surface. Snorkel above the sculptures as the coral reclaims them — a quietly hopeful counterpoint, and a side of Bali very few travelers ever see.

Close the journey in style on the Bukit Peninsula at Ungasan, in a luxury pool villa at Karma Kandara perched high on the cliffs above the Indian Ocean. After two weeks of temples, lakes and reefs, these days are deliberately unstructured — free time to enjoy the property, the villa's private pool, and the view that drops away to the sea.

The signature of the stay is the resort's private beach club far below, reached by the on-property cable car only — a funicular that carries you down the cliff face to a stretch of white sand and turquoise water that feels entirely your own.
