Day One

Arrive in Lisbon

Lisbon

Welcome to Portugal. Your private driver meets you at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) and transfers you into the city — typically to a hotel in Chiado (the most walkable central neighbourhood, between Bairro Alto and Baixa), Alfama (the oldest district, Moorish-era lanes below the castle), or Príncipe Real (quieter, tree-lined, favoured by locals). The transfer is about 20 minutes.

Afternoon at leisure. Lisbon is a city built on seven hills with light that reflects off the Tagus estuary in a way that is genuinely unlike any other European capital. A first walk through Baixa Pombalina — the elegant 18th-century grid rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake — and a pastel de nata at Manteigaria sets the tone. Your specialist has the welcome dinner reservation ready.

Day Two

Alfama, Belém & Fado

Lisbon

A full Lisbon day in two distinct neighbourhoods. Morning: Alfama — the oldest part of the city, a labyrinth of narrow lanes, tiled facades, and the Castelo de São Jorge at the top with panoramic views across the Tagus.

Your specialist has arranged a private walking tour covering the castle, the Miradouro da Graça and Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewpoints, and the Sé Cathedral (Lisbon's oldest church, built 1147 on the site of a former mosque).

Afternoon: Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus where the Age of Discovery launched. The Jerónimos Monastery (UNESCO, Manueline Gothic, where Vasco da Gama's tomb is located), the Torre de Belém, and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos are all within walking distance.

The pastéis de nata at the original 1837 Pastéis de Belém bakery are non-negotiable. Evening: a fado performance in Mouraria — the neighbourhood where the genre was born, far more authentic than the tourist venues in Chiado.

Day Three

Sintra Day Trip

Sintra · Cabo da Roca

A private-driver day trip to Sintra — 40 minutes from Lisbon, a UNESCO Cultural Landscape of fairy-tale palaces and forested hillsides that Byron called 'glorious Eden.'

Your specialist pre-books timed entry to Pena Palace (the technicolour Romanticist palace; the 8:30am first entry beats the coach tours by an hour) and Quinta da Regaleira (the Gothic-revival estate with the famous Initiation Well — an 89-foot inverted tower spiraling into the earth, used for Masonic initiation ceremonies).

Afternoon: Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe — a clifftop lighthouse with the Atlantic stretching to the horizon. Return to Lisbon by early evening for a final dinner at a restaurant your specialist has reserved.

Day Four

Depart Lisbon

Lisbon Airport

A final Lisbon morning before departure. Time Out Market is worth a final coffee and pastry — the converted 1892 market hall in Cais do Sodré now houses Lisbon's best street food under one roof. Tram 28 is worth the ride if you have time: the historic yellow tram runs from Martim Moniz through Alfama and down to the waterfront, passing the facades of the old city.

Your private transfer to the airport departs at the right time for your flight. Your Juniper specialist remains reachable through departure. Portugal tends to produce the kind of trips where people are already planning to come back.

About this itinerary

Is 4 days enough time for Lisbon?

Four days is the right length for a focused Lisbon city break — it covers Alfama, Belém, Sintra, and the city's best restaurants without feeling rushed. If you want to add Porto and the Douro Valley, your specialist can extend to 6–8 days. If you want to add the Algarve coast, a 9-day Portugal Uncovered route works better. This 4-day format is specifically designed as a city-break that delivers Lisbon in full.

Where is the best neighbourhood to stay in Lisbon?

It depends on what you want. Chiado gives you the most walkable access — restaurants, wine bars, Bairro Alto nightlife, and the city centre all within 10 minutes on foot. Alfama is the most atmospheric — you wake up to church bells and tile-covered facades, but it's steep and less practical for walking everywhere. Príncipe Real is the quieter, more residential option with excellent independent restaurants and the Jardim das Necessidades nearby. Your specialist matches the hotel to your style rather than just the star rating.

When is the best time for a Lisbon city break?

March through May and September through October are the best windows — the light is excellent, temperatures are comfortable (18–24°C), and the main sites are accessible without the July-August peak crowds. Sintra is particularly manageable outside of summer. Lisbon in winter (November through February) is mild by European standards — Lisbon rarely drops below 10°C — and the city has fewer tourists at the main sites, but the Sintra palaces can be overcast. The city is genuinely good year-round; your specialist advises based on your specific dates.

Can this trip be extended to include Porto or the Algarve?

Yes, and both extensions work well from Lisbon. Porto can be added as a 2–3 night extension (private transfer or 3-hour train), giving you the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia and the Douro Valley — a natural 6–7 day combined trip. The Algarve adds 2 nights of dramatic coastline — Ponta da Piedade grottos at Lagos, Benagil sea cave, beach time. The 9-day Portugal Uncovered itinerary covers Lisbon, Sintra, Évora, the Algarve, and Porto in a single trip. Your specialist can build any version during the consultation.
