The best things to do on a Bali honeymoon are almost never the things on the standard list. The famous rice-terrace viewpoint, the swing, the gates at Lempuyang — those are queues with a photograph at the end. What Bali does extraordinarily well is the private and the early: a temple at dawn, a healer’s blessing, an empty island reef, a volcano before the light. Here is what we actually build days around, and what we quietly leave out.
What is worth getting up early for?
Mount Batur and Kintamani before dawn
A pre-dawn start to be above the cloud as the sun comes up over the caldera, with Lake Batur below. You are back by mid-morning and the rest of that day does not exist — plan nothing. It is the single most photographed sunrise in Bali and it earns it.
The temples, at opening
Every well-known temple in Bali is transformed by arriving at opening rather than at eleven. The difference is not marginal; it is the difference between a ceremony and a crowd. If a guide suggests a mid-morning temple, push back.
What can you do that most visitors cannot?
A full Balinese day, not a sightseeing one
The best day we build in Ubud has no landmarks in it at all: a walk through the rice fields with the farmers who work them, making Loloh Kunyit — the turmeric tonic families drink — a gamelan and dance lesson, and a blessing with a Balinese healer and holy water. It is the difference between seeing Ubud and spending a day inside it, and it is the thing couples talk about afterwards.
Luwus countryside cycling and Sangeh
Back roads through terraced rice fields, a visit with a Balinese family, and then Sangeh Monkey Forest — six hectares of nutmeg trees around the ancient Bukit Sari Temple, with macaques. It is the calm alternative to the monkey forest in Ubud, which is a very different experience at volume.
Bali by helicopter
For couples who want one extravagant hour: rice terraces, Kintamani Lake and Mount Batur from above, out towards Rinjani on Lombok, with a picnic landing. It also solves a real problem, since it converts the island’s worst transfers into a view.

Hands-on, small, and genuinely about the cacao rather than about a gift shop. A good rainy afternoon.
What should you do on the water?
More than most itineraries allow. The mainland south coast is not Bali’s best water — the Nusa islands are.
Snorkelling off Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan is the real thing, and manta rays at Manta Point are close to reliable in season. For couples with a fortnight, a private catamaran from West Lombok out to the Eastern Gilis — Gili Lampu, Kondo, Bidara and Kapal — reaches islands that are close to empty, nothing like the famous Trawangan and Meno. Reef snorkelling, a picnic on a deserted beach, and a sunset sail back.
What is genuinely romantic rather than marketed as romantic?
Dinner in your own villa, cooked by your own cook, is better than almost any restaurant booking in Bali and costs less. If your villa is staffed, use it — couples consistently underuse the single best thing they have already paid for.
Beyond that: a Balinese massage at the end of a walking day rather than as a scheduled event; the Uluwatu cliffs at sunset without a booking; and a floating breakfast, which is unabashedly a photograph and is also lovely, provided you have accepted that you are doing it for the photograph.
What should you skip?
The swing. The Instagram gates at Lempuyang, where the “reflection” is a piece of glass held under a phone and the queue runs to hours. Tanah Lot at sunset with everyone else, unless you are going with someone who knows where to stand. Kuta entirely.
And — carefully — anything advertising close contact with captive wildlife. The good version of Balinese nature is a reef, a forest and a guide, not an enclosure.
How much should you actually schedule?
One thing a day, and a genuinely empty day every third. Bali punishes over-scheduling more than most destinations because the traffic makes every extra commitment expensive in time.
The trips that work have a shape: something early, a long slow middle, and nothing after four. The honeymoons that do not are the ones with three activities and two transfers on a Tuesday.
