Most fully private, custom Costa Rica trips fall between about $5,000 and $15,000+ per person, with hand-selected four and five-star stays and private transfers arranged end to end, excluding international flights. The single biggest thing that moves you inside that range is not lodge tier — it is how many regions you try to cover, because in Costa Rica every extra region costs a transfer day or a domestic flight.
Why is Costa Rica more expensive than people expect?
Because it is not a beach holiday with excursions attached; it is several small trips inside one country. Every region change means a long drive or a light aircraft, a new lodge, and usually a new guide. That structure is what makes Costa Rica worth doing and it is also what makes it cost more than a single-resort destination of similar quality.
The other reason is that the good version depends on people. A licensed naturalist guide who genuinely knows the forest is not interchangeable with a driver, and the difference is visible within an hour.
What actually drives the cost?
How many regions you cover
The biggest lever, and the most controllable. Two regions in eight days is comfortable. Four is expensive in both money and days — and worse as a holiday. Cutting one region often improves the trip and lowers the price at the same time, which is a rare combination.
Lodge tier
Costa Rica’s ceiling is high and rising, particularly on the Papagayo coast and in the Osa. The gap between an excellent mid-tier eco-lodge and a landmark property is wide, and both are legitimate.
Guiding and transport
A private guide-driver for the trip, rather than shared shuttles and per-activity group tours, is the upgrade that changes the experience most. On winding roads with a mixed-age group it is also the difference between a good day and a long one.
Domestic flights
Short hops on small aircraft to Osa, Tortuguero or the Nicoya coast turn five-hour mountain drives into forty minutes. They are not cheap per minute and they are frequently worth it, especially on family trips and at either end of a wellness stay.
Season
Mid-December through April is dry season and priced accordingly, with the Christmas and New Year window at the very top. May through November — the green season — is materially cheaper, greener and quieter, with afternoon rain rather than lost days.

What is not included?
International airfare, travel insurance, meals not attached to your lodges, park entry beyond anything specified, gratuities and personal spending. We quote land arrangements as land arrangements rather than presenting a figure that quietly assumes you are not eating dinner.
How do you spend less without gutting the trip?
- Travel in green season. May, June, September, October and November. The largest single saving, and for wildlife it is arguably an improvement.
- Cut a region, not a night. Three nights somewhere beats two nights plus a transfer day, and costs less.
- Keep the guide. If something has to go, let it be a lodge tier rather than the naturalist. The guide is what you will remember.
- Mix tiers deliberately. A landmark property for the last three nights and excellent mid-tier before it is a better trip than uniform middle.
Is Costa Rica cheaper than Hawaii or the Caribbean?
Not necessarily, and that surprises people. A comparable standard of lodge and private guiding lands in a similar place. What Costa Rica gives you for it is variety and wildlife that neither can match — several distinct ecosystems, and a genuine chance of seeing things you have only seen filmed.
Can you still travel this winter?
Not with us for 2026–27 — those departures are fully booked, which is worth saying plainly rather than discovering on a call. December and the New Year are Costa Rica’s most requested weeks and they go early.
The practical options are Winter 2027–28, booked well ahead, or the shoulder months either side of the peak, which are quieter and cost less. Our month-by-month guide lays out what each month actually offers.
